The Japanese used car export industry is one of the largest in the world with over 1 million used cars exported annually.

Why is this industry so large?

The answer lies within many factors:

  1. Japanese cars depreciate quickly which is great news for people from other countries.
  2. The cars are very well looked after.
  3. Roads in Japan are of top quality and very well maintained and the speed limits are very low – even the expressway has a limit of 80km/h!
  4. Registration process is very strict with mandatory government inspections of every vehicle every two years. Even a small oil leak or a broken rubber hood cover on a CV joint is enough to fail and would require repair before the car can be registered.

Countries that import cars from Japan include Germany, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, UK, Canada, USA, Bahrain, UAE, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Mozambique, Uganda, DR Congo, Malawi, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, South Sudan, the Caribbean, Pacific Islands, France, Cyprus, Georgia and many many more destinations.

The main way cars are traded in Japan is through the Japanese Car Auctions. There are over 100 auction houses in Japan offering up to 100,000 vehicles every week. Auction groups include USS Auctions, JAA Auction located in Kasai Tokyo – one of the oldest auctions, HAA Kobe, TAA Group, Honda Group and many more.

Only registered dealers with membership with the auction houses can participate in the auction.

Each of the auctions will be held once per week with several auctions every day from Monday through to Saturday. They can stock anywhere from a few hundred cars to over 15,000 cars as with USS Tokyo.

Each car is inspected by qualified personal and a detailed report on the condition of each vehicle is produced.

Each car is given a lot number and a specific time the car will be auctioned. Dealers can inspect the cars prior to this time on the day of the auction. When the car is auctioned it is a very quick process taking about 30 seconds to complete with dealers bidding at the auction but also from remote locations via computer link from all over Japan.

Both left hand drive and right hand drive cars are available and include all the top brands like Mercedes Benz, AMG, Porsche, BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda and many more.

To participate in the Japanese Car Auctions one must find a reputable dealer that can provide a translation of the auction inspection report as well as their own inspection to ensure the purchase of a quality car.

One such company is Auto Access Japan Ltd. Their hands on approach is leaving the opposition sitting in the offices twiddling their thumbs!

Auto Access Japan inspects the vehicles as well as translating the auction sheets. They produce a detailed report of their own and make it available before the car goes to auction including photos and video when possible.

Their online auction system makes it easy to search for cars, track them, bid and much much more.
